While door curtains might seem like something of a niche for retailers, their popularity is set to skyrocket in 2023.
At Homefords, we’ve crunched the numbers when it comes to door curtains and related products to keep you ahead of the game with customer demand. In this post, we’ll discuss the rise in popularity of door curtains, why demand is increasing, and how to capitalise on this interest…
First, let’s take a closer look at door curtains
For the uninitiated, door curtains are curtains that can be hung in the way of a door using a curtain pole. Far from an obstruction, they can easily be slid open to walk through the door whenever needed. In doing so, they add an extra layer of thermal insulation to customers’ homes.
Door curtains can be used internally to prevent draughts passing through the home, so it’s easier to keep a particular room warm. However, they can also be used on external-facing doors, such as your front, back or side door. In this case, they stop heating escaping the home, making it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature.
While door curtains are commonly used on single doors, they can also be used on larger fixtures like double doors and French doors. In these cases, you may want to opt for two curtains – as you would with a large window – rather than the single door curtain that’s used for smaller fixtures.
Door curtain popularity is going up
Based on data from Google Trends, interest in door curtains has stayed at the same level for the past five years. As expected, each year has its peaks and troughs – when temperatures fall and rise, respectively. However, in 2022, that’s been taken to another level.

From September onwards, Google searches for “door curtains” in the UK have more than tripled in volume, compared to the spring and summer months. That’s taken interest to an unprecedented 5-year high – suggested there might be more behind it than a simple seasonal spike.
| Month | Apr-22 | May-22 | Jun-22 | Jul-22 | Aug-22 | Sep-22 | Oct-22 | Nov-22 |
| Google UK Search Volume | 14800 | 14800 | 14800 | 14800 | 27100 | 49500 | 49500 | 49500 |
What’s behind the higher interest?
When looking for reasons behind the recent popularity of door curtains, it’s hard to see past the current cost of living crisis and energy price hikes. Since the price cap was lifted in April 2022, energy prices have shot up to record levels. The initial 54% rise for the average household, was followed by a further 80% in October 2022 – with more expected in 2023.
At the same time, there’s a broader cost of living crisis as wages fail to keep up with inflation – resulting in a fall for real term incomes. That’s largely down to the higher cost of energy and fuel, which has a knock-on effect for practically everything else we pay for.
Put simply, people across the UK are looking for ways to save money. Given the extortionate cost of energy, heating their homes is the first port of call.
Because they stop heat escaping your home, door curtains are a good way to improve thermal retention, meaning you don’t need your heating on as high or as much. The same is true for internal doors if you’re heating a particular room, with many advising to ‘heat yourself, not your home’ to save money.
Popularity goes beyond door curtains
Like a screw without a driver, a door curtain isn’t much use on its own. As such, it’s no surprise to see a complementary product rising in popularity too. Door curtain poles have seen a similar spike in interest, which we expect to continue over the coming months and years.

Door curtain poles are fixed to the wall above a door, where a door curtain can then be hung. They’re available in a choice of different lengths to fit the door and door curtain in question – not to mention various styles to give customers more freedom with their design.
We’re seeing the same increase with thermal door curtains too.
