How Do Hotels Keep Bedding Sheets So White?

There’s nothing quite like the crisp, whiter-than-white quality of hotel bedding for a comfortable night away from home. Inspiring a feeling of cleanliness and luxury, there’s something about that impeccable whiteness that makes the room look bright and spacious, and the bed look more inviting than ever.

Knowing your linen is freshly cleaned, starched, and ironed often has the effect of a great night’s sleep. But how do hotels keep sheets white with guest after guest sleeping in them each night?

Quality fabrics

Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, and hemp are longer-lasting and higher quality than synthetic or combined fabric alternatives. Sheets made from these materials, in particular Egyptian cotton, are softer and more breathable, which retain heat in the winter and keep cool in the summer.

The higher the quality of fabric, the more durable they will be during the washing process, and the more likely they are to retain their bright white colour.

No harsh ingredients

Contrary to what many people believe, you don’t always need to use bleach or harsh chemicals to keep your whites white. In fact, natural ingredients such as lemon juice and baking soda are much more effective and gentle on fabrics.

Pre-wash to treat stains

The number one way to maintain whiteness in sheets is to avoid eating or drinking in bed, and remove any make-up, so that stains are kept to a minimum. But how do hotels keep sheets white when these are variables they can’t control?

Stains are inevitable in hotel laundry, and a pre-wash treatment of lemon juice and baking soda is an effective way to tackle them. Add the sheets to a large pot filled with cold water, along with the lemon juice and baking soda, then gently bring to a boil. Rub the lemon juice and baking soda on any noticeable stains.

Small loads and low temperatures

Once the sheets have been pre-washed and rinsed, add them to the washing machine. It’s important not to overload the machine. One set of sheets at a time for a regular-sized machine is what you’re aiming for.

While a high temperature is effective at removing stubborn stains, it also reduces the life of your sheets, so wash on warm at around 40 degrees on a cotton cycle, unless your sheets are heavily stained. Use a high-quality laundry detergent that is suitable for whites and make sure you use the right dosage.

Airdry

You might think that hotels always use tumble dryers for all of their laundry, but one of the best ways to keep sheets white is to airdry in the sunshine. The sun’s rays have natural lightening effects, and hanging outside to dry adds that fresh, outdoors smell to your linen.

Tumble dryers can shorten the life of sheets and damage fibres, while hanging outside to airdry saves energy and can remove creases and reduce the amount of ironing required.
