How Long Does Bedding Last?

Checking Bedding in Room

If you provide guests with bedding, knowing how long it lasts is important.

Keep the bedding too long, and you’ll provide guests with a poor stay. Faded designs, frayed ends, poor hygiene, bobbles – these are just a few of the issues you can face.

Throw away your bedding too soon, and you’re wasting money and reducing your profits. It’s a balancing act.

Read on as we look at how long bedding lasts and what’s right for you and your guests. We look at bedding sheets, pillowcases, duvets and more…

Why bedding is so important in hospitality

Comfort, cleanliness and tidiness are three key parts of great hospitality to make sure guests are fully satisfied. Bedding is one of the most important elements of this.

No matter who you are catering for, whether it’s hospitals, care homes, B&B’s or hotels, a clean and tidy bed is essential. They make the room look so much more inviting.

A bed with soft covers and plump pillows offers a sense of luxury. It also ensures a good reputation for hygiene and comfort.

Bedding that is breathable, soft, and smooth can enhance your mood by improving the quality and length of your sleep.

Lifespan for different bedding types:

The lifespan varies depending on the type of bedding. This is because some items have much more contact with your body, and some things, like duvets, are more protected.

  • Bed Sheets

When considering when it is time to replace your sheets, the quality of the fabric is an important factor. Materials such as polyester will only give around two years of use. Higher quality materials including cotton and linen will offer between three to five years.

After years of washes and use, the fibres can start to break down and no longer offer maximum comfort for people. There are signs to look out for, including discolouration, tearing and a reduction in softness. When these things appear, it will be the time to replace bed sheets.

  • Pillowcases

According to sleep experts[GH1] , pillowcases will last between one to two years. This is due to their direct contact with skin which means they absorb more bacteria.

While washing them properly and on a regular basis can remove a lot of the bacteria build up, over time they will lose their softness due to wear and tear. This means they will need to be replaced.

  • Duvets

Duvets will last much longer than other bedding items, offering up to twenty years of comfort depending on the fill. They are not weighed down by body weight like sheets and mattress toppers. So, they can have a long lifespan if they are good quality, aired on a regular basis and rotated with the seasons.

  • Duvet Sets

Like bed sheets, duvet covers can be worn down quickly. However, if they are given regular washes and ironing, they could last several years. If you use a top sheet, then they will stay fresh for longer.

Sham pillows and throws on the other hand won’t see the same damage. This is especially the case when they are made from good quality materials. This will give duvet sets a long lifespan of more than five years.

  • Mattress protectors

Mattress protectors have a short lifespan of two to three years. They are designed to shield mattresses from dust, stains and any bacteria they are exposed to.

When there are visible signs of the mattress protector wearing down, it is time to replace it. Or even if any damage is not clear straight away, it’s important to replace it regularly to make sure it remains clean and protected.

The same two to three year rule applies for pillow protectors.

  • Bedspreads

Bedspreads don’t have the same skin contact as other items of bedding. This means they won’t have the same build up of bacteria caused by dead skin cells and sweat.

Like everything, as long as they are taken care of then they can last between five to seven years.

Bedspreads are a great addition to any set of bedding. Not only do they add an element of luxury and cosiness to the bed, according to experts they can aid sleep. This is because the extra weight can produce hormones that enhance sleep quality.

So, what is the answer?

As you can see, there is no blanket answer to how long bedding lasts. However considering if it comes into direct contact with your skin and the pressure it could face from body weight are deciding factors.

In general, the more exposed an item is to wear and tear, the shorter it’s longevity.
