Percale vs Sateen: What’s Right for Me?

Woman Making a Bed

Believe it or not, the type of weave you choose for your bedding will affect the look and feel of the sheets. When you’re looking for the right bedding for your Airbnb, hotel or hostel, you’ll probably be faced with a choice between percale or sateen.

Unless you take significant interest in the bedding business, you might not even know what these two words mean, let alone how to choose what’s right for you. As an importer and supplier of wholesale bedding with over a century of experience in the industry, we know a thing or two about the differences between percale and sateen – so read on!

In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at percale vs sateen fabric so that you can be better equipped to find the bedding that’s right for you.

Percale

Typically, percale sheets feature a one-over-one-under weave, which is a more consistent thread resulting in a ‘crisper’ finish. As a tightly woven weave, it gives the fabric a simple, matte finish while providing ultra-breathability. This criss-cross pattern is usually used in thread counts of 180 and above.

Percale sheets are most easily comparable to the perfect white button-down – crisp, clean and breathable. It’s cool to the touch and lighter in weight, making percale fabric great year-round, and especially in those balmy summer months.

Sateen

Sateen is a more lustrous experience with the irregular weave producing slick, silky smoothness – quite different to a crisp, white shirt. Sateen sheets tend to feature a three-over-one-under weave, but you may see some with four-over-one-under weaves.

This weave does produce a thicker, less breathable sheet than the percale weave does, making sateen sheets well-suited to the cooler months to stay cosy.

What’s right for me?

This answer depends on your needs. Are you looking for crisp, cool, lightweight sheets? Then percale may be the right fit for you. Are you looking for silky sheets that are heavier, warmer and more wrinkle-resistant? Then take a look at sateen sheets.

Percale and sateen bedding have different personalities, each with their own perks and drawbacks. Try out a set of each to see what you – and your guests – prefer. You may find that both are right for your business but at different times of the year.
