What Blinds Are Best for Bathrooms?

The bathroom is one of the hardest rooms in the house to get window dressing right. Steam, splashes, mould risk, privacy, light control. All of it has to work in a small space with damp air for hours every day. Some blinds handle that well. Others fail within a couple of years. The difference is mostly about material.

The two materials that work

Two materials are genuinely well-suited to bathroom use.

PVC venetian blinds are the standard recommendation. The slats are made from solid PVC, which does not absorb water, does not warp from steam, does not rot, and wipes clean with a damp cloth in seconds. They tilt and lift like any venetian blind, so you can let light in without losing privacy. They are not the most luxurious-looking option, but they are the ones that still look the same after five winters of hot showers.

Roller blinds in synthetic fabric (polyester, PVC-coated, or vinyl) are the other practical choice. The fabric is treated to resist mildew and water marks, and the design is simple enough that there are no slats or cords to collect grime. Roller blinds also give a cleaner look than venetians for buyers who want something more modern.

What to avoid

The blinds that look great in showrooms but fail in bathrooms:

Faux wood venetians are the most common mistake. They are sold as ‘moisture resistant’ rather than waterproof, which is a meaningful difference. Long-term steam exposure causes the slats to warp, swell, or crack at the edges. They are fine for kitchens and lounges; they are wrong for bathrooms.

Real wood venetians are worse. Wood absorbs steam, swells, splits, and grows mould on the inside of the slats where you cannot see it.

Fabric roman blinds absorb damp air, develop mildew spots in the folds, and need replacing within a couple of years.

Privacy and light considerations

Bathroom windows often have textured or frosted glass, which solves daytime privacy on its own. The blind in that case is mostly there for night-time privacy and for blocking the early-morning sun.

For windows with clear glass overlooking a garden or another property, day-and-night privacy is the priority. PVC venetians let you tilt the slats for daytime privacy with light still coming in. Roller blinds in a translucent fabric (rather than full blackout) give the same effect with a cleaner look.
