Frequently asked questions

Need more information about documentation, carriers and placing order? Try the FAQ section:

What are EORI numbers

As of January 2021, all EU businesses receiving goods from the UK will need their own unique identification number. This is known as a EORI and your freight forwarder will need it when making customs declarations on your behalf. Without it, your goods will be delayed and you could face extra charges.

If you haven’t already got one, you can easily apply for an EORI number online through your local government website for your organisation.

In most cases, you’ll get your code immediately. However, if any checks are needed the process can take up to 5 working days, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead.

How to provide sea or air waybills

We’ll also need to proof of export for our records. This enables us to provide VAT exemption on goods that are being shipped overseas, keeping costs down for registered businesses.

The easiest way to provide proof is with a sea or air waybill.

A waybill serves as a transport contract between the freight forwarder and the carrier, and provides proof of shipment. It also includes the destination and recipient’s details, so that the goods can be tracked.

If you haven’t got this to hand, ask your freight forwarder to gather the necessary documentation from your carrier.

How to choose the right carrier

When choosing an international carrier to transport goods from the UK to your chosen destination, it pays to do your research. You’ll want to consider the types of products the carrier specialises in, as well as their reputation and speed of service.

It’s also a good idea to consider their location in relation to your freight forwarder, particularly if you want a fast shipment.

Another thing to look into is the insurance and tracking options they offer. Some carriers offer this extra layer of protection for your items in case they are damaged or go missing in transit, which can be vital for large orders.

Prices vary from carrier to carrier and the overall cost of shipment will depend on the size of your order and its final destination. It’s also a good idea to check your chosen carrier’s minimum order for shipment. However, at Homefords, our £100 minimum order is the same whether you place an order for mainland or international shipping.

How to place an international order

Placing a bulk order for international shipment is easy. Simply follow the same steps you normally would, by adding your items to the basket and heading to the checkout once you’ve reached the minimum order value of £100.

When you reach the payment stage, you’ll then want to and the shipping address of your chosen freight forwarder in the UK. We will then deliver your items to them ahead of transportation abroad.

Remember, we’ll need proof of a transport contract before we can despatch your items along with an EORI number if goods are to be shipped to an EU country.
